A Mural Worth Smiling About

A Mural Worth Smiling About

If you've driven past Coleman A. Young lately, you may have noticed a beautiful new mural on the side of our building!

The mural was created by Detroit artist Phillip Simpson, co-owner of the Smile Brand, and made possible through the generous support of Janice Silver Goldman, better known to our students as Aunt J. Together, they helped create a piece of artwork that reflects the heart of our school community.

The mural features some very special members of the CAY family, including Principal Scott, our beloved Mrs. Jabari, and several Coleman A. Young graduates. Mrs. Jabari touched the lives of so many students and staff members during her time at CAY, and it is incredibly meaningful to see her legacy honored in such a beautiful way.

One of the most exciting parts of the project was inviting the students featured in the mural to come see it for the first time. Their excitement and pride was evident as they saw the mural that now permanently honors their connection to CAY.

The mural is more than just artwork, it tells the story of our school. It celebrates the people who have shaped CAY and reminds our students that they are part of something special. We are so grateful to Phillip Simpson and Aunt J for helping bring this vision to life. This mural will serve as a lasting reminder of the people, love, and community that make Coleman A. Young such a special place.
